CHALLENGE
Hedge accounting is an accounting methodology defined under IAS 39 and IFRS 9 for recognizing hedging relationships in financial statements. In principle, both 1:1 hedging relationships and portfolio hedges can be recognized. The need for a dedicated accounting methodology arises from the accounting mismatch between hedging instruments, namely derivatives measured at fair value, and hedged items, typically interest-bearing instruments measured at amortized cost. Hedge accounting is intended to eliminate this mismatch and align the accounting and economic perspectives. In addition, hedge accounting creates methodological consistency between accounting and risk management activities.
